Throwing a party for your toddler or preschooler? Planning and preparation are key. Once you’ve organised the date of the party, the venue, theme and invitations, it’s time to start thinking about the party day itself. Here are 9 tips on party day planning to help ensure your little one’s party is as stress-free as possible and goes off without a hitch.
Here are some tips on kids party preparations - things you can do on the day of the party to help ensure your kids birthday party is as stress-free as possible and goes off without a hitch.

Planning and organisation are key. Once the date of the party, the venue, theme and invitations are all organised , it’s time to start thinking about the party day itself.

9 Tips on Kids Party Preparations - Things to do on the day of the party

1. Create an itinerary

Create an itinerary a few weeks out from the party and include the order of events; from the time you’ll set up the party room to when guests will arrive and when you’ll cut the cake etc.

You don’t have to follow the itinerary exactly on the day, but having a running order you can refer to will help keep your party on track.

2. Have some back up plans

As much as you plan in advance, not everything will go to plan on the day. So be prepared.

Think about what you might do and have some other options up your sleeve.

For instance what will happen if too many guests arrive or your outdoor party suddenly has to be held inside because it’s raining etc.

3. Do what you can in advance

Don’t leave everything until the day of the party. Create a party check list and cross things off as you go.

Try to prepare as much as you can beforehand so you can enjoy the party too.

For example make or pick up the cake, shop for the party food, decide on the party games you’ll play and buy the winners’ presents for those etc.

4. Plan for extras

Make sure you have extras of everything: party food, party bags and prizes.

You never know when you might wind up having an extra guest, or need to add an extra game or two to keep the kids amused.

5. Cleaning is not a priority

Don’t worry about having a spotless house. Children don’t care if the bathroom is sparkling or the carpet freshly steam cleaned.

Tidy up so there’s room for everyone to play and save your energy for the birthday party itself. You'll need it!

6. Remove things from harm

Remove any obstacles or things that could cause harm or get easily broken.

Put away your child’s favourite toys too to ensure they’re not damaged in the party frenzy.

Don’t forget to have basic first aid items on hand, just in case.

7. Party decorations with impact

If you don’t have too much time to decorate your house or party room, paper lanterns make a great impact with little effort.

They are quick to assemble and can be re-used for other parties or special occasions too.

Simply hang a string or two of lanterns across the party room or outside in the garden.

Balloons offer another great option as party decorations for very little cost.

8. Don’t forget the photos

Don’t forget the party photos.

Perhaps ask a friend or family member to take them throughout the party so that you can appear in at least a few.

9. Don’t sweat the small stuff

It’s your child’s special day. So as long as they’re having fun, it’s a success!
