Messy Mates messy play classes in Christchurch
Messy Mates is owned by two mums. We have watched our own children grow and learn through messy play and wanted to share this amazing experience with local families.
We now run hour-long classes in Rolleston and Halswell which offer a huge variety of messy play activities which include mixing, pouring, squelching, splashing, digging and much much more!
What is messy play?
Messy play is the term used for any activities that allow children to work with their hands (and sometimes feet) to explore various textures, use their senses and create a controlled mess.
It often involves traditionally messy ingredients such as paint, slime, sand, water, mud, playdough or food items like cooked pasta, dried rice or flour.
Benefits of messy play
Messy play has several benefits and the early childhood curriculum here in NZ, Te Whariki, recognises that having the opportunity to take part in messy play can have a big impact on a child’s learning.
“Exploring through messy play supports learning across all the strands of Te Whāriki. In particular, messy play supports the Communication strand, where children discover and develop different ways to be creative and expressive.” – Ministry of Education
Messy play helps support many areas of children’s development. It encourages communication and language development, supports the ability to problem solve and play independently, promotes physical development and fosters curiosity, imagination and exploration.
