Make your own magical reindeer dust

The kids will have lots of fun making this magical reindeer dust to help guide Santa to your house on Christmas Eve. It's a tradition you can share with the whole family each year. Reindeer dust is made from a combination of glitter and oats. The glitter is to help guide the reindeers to your house, whilst the oats will help feed the reindeers when Santa is busy filling up all the stockings.

This recipe is very adaptable.

You can tweak the quantities depending on how much you reindeer dust you would like to make or what ingredients you have to hand.

  • 2 cups of oats
  • 1/2 cup glitter (one colour or a mix of colours)
  • Zip lock bag
  • Small bags for the reindeer dust
  • Ribbons or string to tie the small bags
  • Paper & pen to write your poem

What you need to do

1. Pour the oats into a zip lock bag and then add the glitter.

2. Zip up the bag and shake gently to mix the reindeer dust.

3. Empty the reindeer dust into a small bag for each child.

4. Tie off each bag with a colourful ribbon and add a poem.

On Christmas Eve

Just before bedtime on Christmas Eve give each child their own bag of reindeer dust so they can run around and sprinkle it over the garden whilst you recite the Reindeer Dust Poem.

You can make up your own poem or use this very simple one:

Reindeer Dust Poem for Christmas Eve

We sprinkle dust on the lawn at night
So the moon will make it sparkle bright.

It’ll show the reindeers where to go.
From the night sky they’ll see it glow.

The dust will guide them to our home
As Santa’s reindeer fly and roam.

We'll go to bed like good girls and boys
And see if Santa brings some toys.

Once the kids are in bed ...

When the kids have gone to bed, remember to clear away the reindeer food, leaving just a few crumbs.

Do this before they get up in the morning to make it look like Santa and the reindeers really came to your house.
