What you’ll need for your sand and water sensory play activity

  • Under bed storage box or large shallow container
  • Sea animals and fish
  • Decorative shells or small shells from the beach
  • Play sand
  • Water
  • Blue food colouring (optional)

How to set up your sand and water sensory play activity

1. Pour sand out at one end of the storage bin or shallow container.

2. Place your shells at the edge of the sand to act as a barrier between the sand and the water.

3. Slowly pour water into the other end of the storage bin or shallow container. Keep the water level fairly shallow so that it doesn’t go over the sand.

4. Add a few drops of blue food colouring to the water and stir slowly to combine to make it look like the sea. This step is optional.

5. Add the ocean animals and fish to the water and maybe a few small shells to the sand and you’re good to go!

Tips for your sand and water sensory play activity

  • Add a few drops of washing up liquid to the water to help make washing off the blue food colouring a little easier.

  • For added fun, why not give your kids old teaspoons to use for digging in the sand or small toy sail boats to float on the water.
