How to make a rainbow salt tray

What you will need for your rainbow salt tray

  • A shallow baking tray, large lid with a rim or a box with low slides

  • Approx 100g cooking salt

  • Sellotape

  • Coloured paper in the colours of the rainbow (optional)

  • Scissors

  • A paint brush (optional)

How to make your rainbow salt tray

1. Cut the paper into strips approx. 4cm-5cm wide with the scissors.

2. Then trim the strips length ways so that they're the same length as the tray is wide.

 2. Place the strips of paper in the tray, overlapping the edges slightly, and alternating the colours so they're set out in order of the colours of a rainbow.

 3. Stick cellotape completely along the joins of the paper to avoid the salt moving underneath it.

 4. Cover the paper lightly with salt, so it's just covered with a thin layer.

 5. Your toddler or preschooler can now use the paint brush to draw, make patterns or write in the salt.

 6. When they’ve finished, shake the tray lightly to hide the coloured paper with the salt and start again!

Tips for your rainbow salt tray

  • If you don't have paper that's in the colours of a rainbow, any coloured paper will work well. Just use use 3 or 4 different colours to make it interesting.

  • If you don’t have a paint brush to hand, your little one’s fingers will work just as well.

  • Only a small amount of salt is required for this activity as too much can make it harder to see the drawings.
