Kids love playing with clay and making their own creations.

Playing with clay has many benefits and gives kids the opportunity to not only be creative, but also to learn about texture, shape and form whilst having lots of fun.

Follow these easy instructions and make your own clay at home.

What you will need

  • 1 cup corn flour
  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1.5 cups water
  • A few drops of food colouring
  • Old spoon for mixing
  • Old saucepan for cooking the clay
  • Cling film to cover the clay once it's made

How to make colourful clay

1. To make the clay in one colour add all the ingredients to an old saucepan.

2. Mix everything together with the spoon and cook over a medium heat.

3. Keep stirring the mixture constantly until it is too hard to stir any more.

4. Let the clay mixture cool for 15 minutes.

5. Remove the clay from the saucepan and knead it on a wooden board or the kitchen bench until it is smooth.

6. Wrap the clay up in the cling film to keep it moist until you're ready to use it.

7. When you're ready, unwrap the clay and help the kids make all sorts of things. From pots and animals, to Christmas tree decorations, letters, numbers, fossils, ornaments and more.

8. Once they've finished, leave their creations to dry and harden. It will take around 1 day for the clay to set hard.

Tip

  • Repeat the process a few more times using different coloured food colouring so you end up with a range of fun colours for the kids to play with.
