We all love summer, but it can wreak havoc with kids sleep patterns with balmy nights and daylight streaming through their curtains. A good night’s sleep is important for all of us, so help make things more comfortable with these 5 easy tips to help them get to sleep during the warmer months.

Kids rely heavily on environmental cues when it comes to getting to sleep, such as light and temperature.

On hot summer’s nights their bodies have trouble cycling through the phases of sleep. Add in daylight savings and you’ve got the perfect recipe for an overtired child the next day.

A good night’s sleep is important for all of us, so help make things more comfortable with these 5 easy ways to help them get to sleep during the warmer months.

 

5 Summer sleep tips for young kids

 

1. Using the right bedlinen


What your kids bed sheets are made out of is key. Cotton bed sheets are perfect for summer because they are breathable and cool.

During the night your kids’ body temperatures drop, so it's important that they have a top sheet that stays in place and also a blanket handy.

On those really hot nights putting the pillowcase in the freezer for a bit before bed can do wonders or even just having a cold flannel they can use beside their bed can help too.

 

2.  Choosing cooler nightwear


Make sure your kids pjs or nightdresses are made out of fabric that’s light and breathable.

Loose fitting, cotton nightwear works best during summer.

 

3. Managing the temperature


A dark room is a cooler room. So if your little one’s bedroom gets a lot of afternoon sun, pull the curtains in the afternoon to keep the room cooler.  

Remember heat rises. Bunk beds are awesome, but if you have a child on the top bunk it can get quite hot up there.

A fan pointed up can help, or perhaps you could move their mattress so they can camp out on the floor during the warmer nights. 

 

4. Encouraging air flow


Open the windows to let some fresh air in or use a little desk fan beside your kids bed to help circulate the air in their bedroom and cool them down.

Just turn the fan off or close the window when you head to bed.

 

5. Keeping hydrated


Making sure your little ones are well hydrated is also important.

A good idea is to leave a cup or sippy cup filled with water and ice beside their bed.
