The kids will love these homemade tin can drums!

They can be made from recycled materials and things you already have at home.

You can also make several different sized drums using other types of containers to show how the sound changes depending on the size.

Items you need for each drum

  • Old washed tin can or suitable container
  • Balloon
  • Scissors
  • Insulation tape
  • Glue or sticky tape
  • Plain or coloured paper
  • Pens/paints
  • Wooden pegs or wooden spoons (optional)

How to make your tin can drums

1. Cut the end of the balloon off.

2. Stretch the balloon tightly over the top of the tin can or container.

3. Use insulation tape to secure the balloon to the tin to stop it slipping off.

4. Glue or sticky tape some plain or coloured paper around the outside of the tin and get the kids to decorate it with paint, felt tip pens, stickers etc

5. You can use the wooden pegs or wooden spoons or your hands for drumsticks and get jamming!

Something to try

  • Why not put some music on and get the kids to drum along to the rhythm or make up their own songs.
