Playing with snow play dough is great fun for young kids all year round, not just in winter.

It will also help to develop their fine motor skills and strengthen the muscles in their hands as they squash, roll and flatten the play dough.

All you need for this easy snow play dough recipe is just 2 basic ingredients!

Make your own snow play dough

Ingredients for your snow play dough

  • Approx. 400-500g cornflour

  • Approx. 300ml body lotion (cheap, perfume-free body lotion from the $2 shop is fine)

  • A mixing bowl

  • Wooden spoon

  • Optional extras: silver glitter, peppermint extract, cookie cutters and a rolling pin

How to make snow play dough

1. If you have time, freeze the cornflour overnight and put the body lotion in the fridge to make the snow play dough extra cold and feel more like snow.

2. Put the cornflour into a mixing bowl.

3. (Optional) Add a few drops of peppermint extract and a few sprinklings of glitter if you would like your play dough to be scented and sparkly.

4. Slowly add the body lotion and mix with your hands or a wooden spoon until you reach a soft dough consistency.

5. The snow play dough is now ready to be moulded and rolled out into all sorts of creations.

Things to try with your snow play dough

  • Play with the snow play dough consistency and add more or less body lotion to get it how you like it. More lotion will give you a more oozey dough and less will give you a more powdery dough.

  • Roll out the snow play dough using your hands or a rolling pin, then get your toddler or preschooler to use cookie cutters to make all kinds of shapes.

  • They can try making their own play dough snowman too. Just make 2 balls of snow play dough for the body and one ball for the head and stack them on top of each other. Then add beads or buttons for the face and front and use pipe cleaners for the arms.
