Make your own homemade coloured pasta

Ingredients for your coloured pasta

  • A few bags of uncooked dried pasta in different shapes

  • White vinegar

  • Food colouring in various colours

  • Zip lock bags for mixing

  • Greaseproof paper

  • Additional zip lock bags or containers for storage

How to make coloured pasta

1. Choose one type of pasta and place one cup into a zip lock bag.

2. Add a tablespoon of vinegar to the bag.

3. Choose one of the food colouring colours and add a few drops to the bag. You may need to add more drops for a more intense colour.

4. Seal the bag and shake it until all the pasta is covered in vinegar. Add more vinegar if required.

5. Let the bag sit for 10-15 minutes, moving the pasta around a few times to get even colour coverage.

6. Lay the pasta onto the greaseproof paper to dry. You will need to separate the pasta so that it doesn’t stick together when it dries.

7. Wait for the pasta to dry. It may take a couple of hours or a day depending on the room temperature. If it’s sunny put the pasta outside to dry more quickly.

8. Once the pasta is completely dry store it in a clean zip lock bag or container.

9. Repeat steps 1-7 for more coloured pasta shapes.

Tips for your coloured pasta

  • There’s no need to spend lots of money on this activity, so buy the cheapest pasta shapes you can find.

  • There are so many fun pasta shapes you can use including macaroni, rigatoni, fusilli (spirals), penne, rotelle (wheels) and farfalle (bow ties).

  • Supervise young children when they’re using the dried pasta as some of the smaller pasta shapes could be potential choking hazards. Or avoid the small shaped pasta altogether.

Activities to try with coloured pasta

  • Use some thin string or ribbon and thread the pasta shapes on to make some colourful jewellery.

  • Make rainbow works of art by sticking the pasta shapes to strong paper or card.

  • Use the coloured pasta in a sensory bin along with scoops and containers.
