Babies and young kids grow so fast, so what better way to treasure this time than by capturing their hand and footprints to look back on when they’re older.

Whether you have a baby, toddler or preschooler, these ideas are a great way to keep a copy of your kids hands and feet to add to their keepsakes or memory box.

5 Ways to keep your kids hand & footprints forever

1. Make a handprint tree

A handprint tree makes an amazing piece of artwork for your kids bedroom!

All you need to do is paint their hand brown and press it onto the bottom of a canvas or a piece of card or paper.
Their handprint will form the tree trunk.

Then using cotton buds dipped in any colour paint, create the leaves for the tree.

2. Personalised handprint & footprint jewellery

For something special, why not contact a professional jeweller and capture your kids hand and/or footprints and ask them to make a customised necklace, pendant, cufflink or keyring.

Not only do they make awesome gifts, they are wonderfully personalised pieces which make great keepsakes too.

3. Vehicle footprints

This is such a super cool idea for boys and girls who love fire engines, police cars and rubbish trucks!

Paint your kids footprint or handprint and get them to stamp it onto a heavy piece of card.

This becomes the main part of the vehicle.

Next paint or draw on wheels, the roof and other accessories to create your design.

4. Handprint alphabet

Who would have thought that you could turn a handprint into an educational resource?

Paint your child’s hand and stamp it onto a large piece of paper or card. Repeat using different coloured paint.

Then make each handprint into an animal or object starting with a letter of the alphabet.

Tips for your soda clay handprints

Here are some useful tips on how to make a clear and smudge-free hand or footprint:

  • For a young baby, wait until they are asleep before you take a print.

  • Tape the paper or canvas down on a smooth surface before taking the print.

  • Have a couple of practices tries first!

  • Press their hand or foot down and roll it from side to side.

  • Instead of painting, try tracing their hand or foot and using that to make a hand or  footprint shape.
