Make your own sun melted crayons

What you need for your sun melted crayons:

  • Some broken crayons
  • Aluminium foil
  • Cookie cutters
  • Paper plate
  • A sunny hot spot outside

To make sun melted crayons

1. Remove any paper from the crayons.

2. Break the crayons into very tiny pieces if they aren’t already.

If you need to break them into smaller pieces, put them into an old plastic bag, secure the bag and hit the pieces of crayon with a rolling pin until they become tiny.

You can use larger pieces of crayon, but they will take much longer to melt.

3. Cover the paper plate with the aluminium foil and place the cookie cutters on top.

4. Put the covered plate and cookie cutters in a sunny hot spot outside and fill the cookie cutters with the broken crayons.

5. Then wait for the crayons to melt!

This can take from an hour upwards depending on the strength of the sun and the size of the crayon pieces.

The hotter the sun and the smaller the crayon pieces the quicker it will be!

6. Whilst the crayons are in the process of melting, you may need to pat them down with a teaspoon or your fingers so that the top of the shape sets smooth once everything’s melted. Be careful you don’t burn yourself.

7. Once the crayons have all melted, let the shapes cool down inside on the kitchen bench and then pop out the new crayon shapes from the cookie cutters.

You may need to trim/break off any small pieces that slipped out of the bottom before they can be used.
