4 Birthday party treasure hunt ideas to try

Check out our different party treasure hunt ideas and keep the kids entertained.

1. Free-for-all treasure hunts

  • This type of treasure hunt doesn’t take too much time to organise.

  • Simply hide a number of small 'treasures' throughout a designated area and get the kids to search for as many as they can. The child with the most treasure is the winner.

  • This treasure hunt works well for small children or a group of kids of a similar age.

  • As a variation to this, the treasure can be 'exchanged' for a party treat. That way it doesn't matter how many tokens each child finds as they’ll each receive a reward.

2. Puzzle treasure hunts

  • For this type of treasure hunt the children work together to find the hidden pieces of a puzzle and put it together again.

  • This treasure hunt is suitable for a variety of ages, depending on the complexity of the puzzle and the number of helpers you have available.

  • Another idea would be to get each child to find the pieces of a puzzle designated just for them and to put it together in order to win a prize. For this you would need to code the pieces with a coloured dot or shape or give them a picture of the completed puzzle so the children can identify which of the hidden pieces belong to their puzzle.

3. Clue treasure hunts

  • In the vein of Sherlock Holmes, the group is given a clue to follow which leads them to the next clue and so on until they find the 'treasure'.

  • This treasure hunt is suited for older children, but can easily be adapted for younger children by using picture clues instead of written ones and having some older children or adults to help them out.

  • To keep them motivated have a mini-treat at each spot and let the children fill a party bag as they go around the hunt (eg 1 wrapped marshmallow per child hidden with the first clue, small bag of chippies each at the next clue etc).

4. Combo treasure hunts

  • This treasure hunt will need more organising and possibly extra help for little ones, so it works for kids of differing ages.

  • For the combo treasure hunt each child is allocated a puzzle which is coded and hidden in a designated area. On the back of the puzzle pieces is part of a clue. Once they put their puzzle pieces together their full clue and treat will be revealed.

  • The group can then move around together following the clues and finding their treats. However, only the child whose clue it is can search the area and find their treasure ‘treat’.
