6 Tips on what to wear in family photos

1. Co-ordinate your clothing for family photos

  • Take the time to co-ordinate clothes, colours and styles for the whole family.

  • Try to avoid traditional, cultural or regal outfits.

2. What colours work best in family photos

  • Earthy tones, subtle colours, neutrals and monochromatic clothes work best for family photos.

  • Avoid dark pinks, dark reds, dark oranges and too much white.

  • A touch of colour is always nice, especially if you break it up with a bit of denim or jewellery.

3. What designs work best in family photos?

  • Simple, plain clothing works best for family photos.

  • Subtle patterns work well and also a touch colour.

  • Try to avoid clothes with bold logos, big bold stripes and any busy patterns, as they’ll be too distracting.

  • The main focus needs to be you, not the clothes your family is wearing.

4. What should babies & kids wear in family photos?

  • Add a bit of fun to your family photos with beanies, pretty headbands, colourful leggings, tutus, dresses and baby bling.

  • Keep it simple. Remember less is more!

  • Avoid dungarees, pinafores, frills and double-layer clothing that might block your child’s face. They look cute, but do not work for photos.

  • Denim always works very well as leggings or jeans, but don’t go for bulky denim tops.

  • Subtle patterns are perfect with a splash of colour.

  • If you baby is under 2 months old, it’s always good to take along a nice, plain stretchy wrap for your photos.  A favourite teddy,or perhaps something special also works well in photos.

5. What should adults wear in family photos?

  • Adults should try to cover up and avoid tank tops and strappy tops and dresses that might reveal underwear. A sleeved top is slimming.

6. Other tips for family photos

  • Avoid haircuts for up to two weeks prior to your photo session.

  • Don’t apply sun-block before your session as it will make your face appear too white.

  • Check for clean faces, especially noses!

  • Feed your littlies well before your session and bring treats for afterwards.

  • Try not to put pressure on children to smile to help avoid those awkward smiles.

  • Most importantly take your sense of humour and just have fun!
