Painting with potato stamps

A tried and tested classic! Painting with potato stamps is lots of fun and cheap and easy to do at home.

Toddlers and preschoolers will love getting their hands messy and creating some great pieces of art.

What you’ll need for your potato stamps activity

 

• 5 potatoes any size (more if you like)

 

• Paper towels

 

• A pencil and a sharp knife or a selection of sharp-edged cookie cutters

 

• A selection of paint colours

 

• Saucers, a muffin tray or small mixing containers for the paints

 

• Plain paper

 

How to make your potato stamps

1. Cut the potatoes in half, ensuring you have a nice flat surface on each side.

2. Leave the potato skins on (no need to peel!) as it'll make them less slippery and easier to hold.

3. Blot the cut sides of the potatoes with the paper towels to remove any excess moisture.

4. With your pencil, draw a shape onto each potato half and use a sharp knife to cut around it. Or you can use sharp-edged cookie cutters to cut out the shapes.

5. Straightforward circles, triangles, rectangles, stars and cross shapes always work well, but be as creative as you like!

6. Put a thin layer of paint(s) into each saucer or tray.

7. Set up the paper and your toddler or preschooler is ready to start dipping the potatoes into the paint and creating their own works of art!
