Find out how to make your own non-toxic watercolour paints with this simple recipe using just 5 ingredients from your pantry.

Quick and easy to do and safe for young kids to use.

What you'll need

  • 8 tbsp baking soda
  • 4 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp golden syrup
  • 4 tbsp cornflour
  • Food colouring in different colours
  • Mixing spoon
  • Container or jug with a spout
  • Mini muffin tin with 12 compartments
  • Toothpicks
  • Paint brushes and paper

How to make your paints

1. Mix the baking soda and vinegar together in a container or jug with a spout and wait for the fizzing to stop.

2. Add the golden syrup and cornflour and mix well until the cornflour has dissolved.

3. Pour the mixture into the muffin tin, filling each compartment to half-full.

4. Use a toothpick to add a few drops of food colouring to one of the muffin tin compartments.

5. Repeat using a clean toothpick and another food colouring colour.

6. Stir each mixture with a clean toothpick until the food colouring is fully blended. Repeat for each of the muffin tin compartments.

7. You're now ready to start painting your works of art using the paint brushes and paper (and fingers too!).

Tip

  • Food colouring gels produce a more intense paint colour than liquid food colouring.
