The official list is out! The 10 most popular baby names in New Zealand for 2017 have been confirmed in the annual report from NZ Department of Internal Affairs.

Around 60,935 births were recorded by the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages last year.

The most popular baby names chosen by Kiwi parents were Charlotte (up from second last year) and Oliver which has topped the list for the fifth year in a row.

Charlotte has been one of the dominant girls' names of recent years, also topping the list in 2006, 2013 and 2014.

It was the second most popular girls' name in 2015 and 2016, perhaps boosted by Princess Charlotte of Cambridge, who was born in May 2015.

For the boys, the name Arlo is gaining momentum and has jumped from 23rd spot in 2016 to 10th in 2017.

It seems that New Zealanders are sticking to traditional boys names with Jack, Noah and William appearing in the top four.

James is still a favourite name for baby boys, making the top 20 every year since 1963.
