Gingerbread Christmas trees

These Christmas treats are easy to make and decorate and will be loved by the whole family.


Ingredients

 
  • 350g plain flour
  • 1-2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 100g butter or margarine
  • 175g soft light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons golden syrup
  • Star or round cutters of different sizes
  • White icing sugar
  • Water

Makes about 20 biscuits.
 

Make your Gingerbread Christmas trees


1. Turn oven on to 190 degrees C /Gas 5.

2. Put the flour, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl and rub in the butter.

3. Add sugar and stir in the syrup and egg to make a firm dough.

4. Roll out the dough to about 5mm thick and cut out your gingerbread stars or circles.

5. Put the shapes onto greased baking trays, spacing them out as they will spread.

6. Bake for 10 to 15 mins until golden brown.

7. Leave to firm up for a couple of minutes on the baking tray before placing on a wire rack to cool.

8. Once cooled, make up some white icing with the icing sugar and water.

9. Start with the largest circle or star shape as your base, spread on some icing. Repeat this using gradually smaller star or circle shapes as you build up your tree.

10. Add the smallest shape to the top to finish of your tree.
 

Variations

 
  • Swap the ginger for cinnamon or a few drops of vanilla essence if you don't like ginger.
 
  • Use small edible silver balls or sprinkles to decorate your tree.
 
  • The same recipe can be used for gingerbread men too!
