Merino is the perfect fibre for little ones to wear all year long.

Merino is also a natural insulator. It holds your baby’s body heat, allows their skin to breathe and helps prevent them from sweating.

Merino wool is ideal for babies, particularly as they haven’t learned to regulate their body temperature and are prone to over-heating in synthetics.

A good rule to follow to help keep babies warm is to dress them in one more layer than you have on or give them an extra blanket whilst they’re sleeping.

Here’s some tips on keeping your baby warm in merino wool:

Merino wool clothing

  • Most body heat escapes through the head, but a merino hat will help prevent heat loss.

  • Baby’s feet are so tiny and feel the cold, especially in synthetic fibres. Merino socks will keep them warm.

  • Putting a little cotton singlet on as a first layer next to your baby’s skin, underneath a merino wool top is ideal.

  • Merino tops are also great for extra warmth at night underneath a merino sleep suit or gown.

  • Merino tights or long johns are great for a layer under pants or under beautiful little dresses. They have feet and a bottom which gives extra warmth. Clothes can also be tucked into them and as they come right up over their nappies they’ll provide added warmth too.

Merino wool blankets & sleeping bags

  • Whilst you want to keep your baby warm and cosy at night, it's important not to let them get too hot.

  • A warm merino wool cellular blanket is better than a duvet as they allow freedom of movement.

  •  A merino blanket will be an item you will also get lots of use out of (in the car, in the buggy) and not just whilst they’re sleeping.

  • To ensure your baby’s not too hot feel their tummy or the back of their neck. Remove a blanket or a piece of clothing if they’re feeling too warm.

  • Putting your little one into a merino sleeping bag will ensure that they can’t kick it off in bed. They’ll also be less likely to wake up and feel the cold.

  • Merino sleeping bags are great to use in their buggy or car seat as well as in their cot.
