Guide to modern cloth nappies - where to start

1. How many cloth nappies will I need?

For reusable cloth nappies from birth, we recommend 18-24 nappies. Newborn babies need changing around 8 times a day, sometimes more!

For two children in cloth nappies, you may want 30-35 nappies.

2. What's the cost of disposable nappies vs cloth nappies?

On average, each child goes through 6 nappy changes each day. That's around 5540 nappies between birth and early toilet training!

You could have spent up to $4000 on just one child in disposable nappies by the time they are 2.5 years old!

However if you spend around $500 on cloth nappies, they will pay for themselves within 6 months.

If you cannot afford to buy a complete set of cloth nappies at once, start with just one.

Then another when you can afford it, even ask for nappies as baby shower gifts, newborn, birthday or Christmas presents. You will have enough before you know it!

3. When should I start using cloth nappies

Using a OSFM (one size fits most) nappy, you can start whenever you like.

Coming home from the hospital and learning all about your new baby can be overwhelming in itself.

Perhaps wait 2-4 weeks to give yourself a good start with breastfeeding and settling in with your newborn first.

The most important aspects of using modern cloth nappies is putting them on correctly, and washing the nappies in the right way.
