Reusable nappies have come a long way since the days of pieces of cloth and safety pins!

There are now plenty of reusable or cloth nappies to choose from and they are easier to use than you may think.

Reusable nappies may not be everyone’s first choice, but here are some reasons why reusable nappies may be suitable for you and your baby or toddler.

9 Reasons to use reusable nappies

1. You can trial reusable nappies first

Lots of brands sell single reusable nappy trial packs so you can see how they work for your baby or toddler before buying them in bulk.

Plus if you’re slightly wary of going full time on reusable nappies, try using both reusable and disposables.

You can use reusables at home and disposable ones when you’re out and about – or whatever system suits your lifestyle.

2. You can help the environment

Reusable nappies can be can be more environmentally friendly than disposables, with less waste sent to landfill sites, but you also have to think carefully about how you wash and dry them.

If you wash your reusable nappies on a fuller load, use an energy-efficient washing machine and always hang them out to dry rather than use a dryer, you can reduce your environmental impact considerably.

And if you use your cloth or reusable nappies on a second child, the carbon emissions associated with using cloth nappies fall even further.

3. Reusable nappies help protect your baby’s skin

The natural fibres of reusable nappies (there’s a wide variety including organic cotton and natural bamboo) allow for more airflow than plastic-woven disposables helping moisture evaporate, which leaves your baby drier and potentially less prone to nappy rash.

Reusable nappies can also help reduce allergic skin reactions to the many chemicals found in disposables.

4. Reusable nappies may save you money in the long run

The initial investment may make reusable nappies seem more expensive at first, but ultimately they work out cheaper per child compared to the cost of disposables.

If you cannot afford to buy a complete set of cloth nappies at once, start with just one.

Then gradually buy others when you can afford them. If you use the nappies on more than one child, the savings are compounded even further.

5. You have so much choice when it comes to reusable nappies

You can buy reusable nappies to suit your budget and baby or toddler.

Chose from shaped nappies, one size or sized ones, two-piece nappies and all-in-ones.

Plus, you’ll be hard pressed to find a colour or print that you don’t like, as there are so many different designs available.

They look cuter than disposable nappies too!

6. You'll see less spillage with reusable nappies

Get the right reusable nappies, and they are far more leak-proof than disposables.

Today's reusable nappies are waterproof and absorbent.

The thicker, more robust elastic on the back and legs of a cloth nappy means that when you are faced with the worst a baby can throw at you, there is a much better chance of containment.

7. Reusable nappies will help with toilet training

Babies are likely to notice when their reusable nappy is wet, which goes a long way in helping them notice the different feeling between being wet and dry.

This can help make toilet training a whole lot easier.

8. Reusable nappies are easy to wash

Empty any solids into the toilet and keep the dirty reusable nappies in a bin with a lid on.

Once it’s full, simply put the whole lot in the washing machine. Make sure the load only has nappies, wash your clothes, towels and linen separately.

Then hang the nappies outside to dry. The sun is a great natural bleach and disinfectant.

9. Reusable nappies are easy to use

Things have evolved since the first terry squares and safety pins emerged.

You can now choose reusable nappies with press-stud fasteners, velcro fastenings and plastic clips that are just as simple to put on your baby as disposable ones.
