Is it time to decorate your kids bedroom?

When it comes to painting kids rooms, it may sound like fun, but you'll find it's more than just choosing a paint colour.

Painting and decorating can be hard work, but with a little preparation up front it won't feel so daunting.

9 Tips on painting kids rooms

Have a look a these tips from choosing paint colours to finding décor and accessories to suit their rooms and grow with them.

1. Babies rooms & nurseries

Newborns and young babies only have black and white vision, so it doesn't really matter what colour you choose when you're creating a nursery!

It will be you looking at the walls as you try to get them to sleep or feed, so select colours that you like, that are soothing and restful to you.

2. Choosing paint colours for kids rooms

Different coloured paints have different effects on people:

  • The colour orange promotes a feeling of comfort and well-being, and green is calming, nurturing and enhances concentration.

  • Lavenders, lilacs and pinks are also calming, while brown helps grounding, so all of these are great nursery colours.

  • Red paint is passionate and emotional, and yellow, while cheerful and energizing can be agitating to babies, and both should be used with caution and only as accent colours.

  • Blue paint is healing and cooling and while grey paint promotes thought, it can also cause sadness.

  • You'll find white paint is hard to clean and can promote secretiveness, while black is dominant and powerful, and both should be used sparingly.

3. Using contrasting paints or combinations

Combining paint colours is an art. What might look good on those little square paint samples, may not go so well together on the walls.

Consider consulting with professional residential painters or staff at the paint shop as to what paint shades go well together or what colours contrast well.

4. Ask your kids how they would like their room decorated

If you have the budget, involve older kids in the choice of paint colours and décor for their room.

However don't be tempted to allow free range, but do include their choices of colours at least in small doses!

5. Paint colours that grow with your kids

Unless you want to repaint regularly, consider choosing paint colours that will grow with your kids.

Neutral wall shades with one wall of a more intense colour and contrasting woodwork can be transformed easily.

You will then only need to paint parts of their bedroom to get a new look as they get older and their tastes and needs change.

6. Décor & accessories for kids rooms

Kids room décor and accessories needn't be expensive.

Hang posters, photos or pictures on neutral walls. These add colour and can easily be updated.

Add cushions or a rug for an instant room update too.

A new piece of kids furniture can also add a different look to their room. Or try painting old furniture to give it a new lease of life.

7. Paint the room yourself or hire a professional painter?

Are you up for the decorating challenge?

Painting and decorating your kids bedrooms requires preparation and patience to achieve a good finish.

Be prepared for sanding, filling, cleaning, and taping before you even get to a paint brush!

Or if it all sounds too much, get a professional house painting service in to do the painting and decorating for you.

8. Wall murals

Many youngsters like wall murals, but be prepared to have to repaint them when your kids interests or tastes change.

If you do decide on a mural, it's worth employing a professional interior painting service. They will have endless stencils for you to choose from.

9. Divide up the space in your kids rooms

If you have the space, consider decorating different parts of your kids rooms in different ways to provide spaces for diverse activities.

As they grow their room will probably become not just a place to sleep and relax, but also a place for them to play and study.
