Creating a great bedroom for toddlers that won’t be outgrown too quickly, can take a lot of creativity and planning.

By allowing your toddler input into the design of their room, you can create an engaging space that reflects their personality, and somewhere they will want to spend time.

With the right pre-planning you may even be surprised how much your child can help in choosing their bedroom furniture décor and colours.

5 Ways to set up a great bedroom for toddlers

1. Not just a bedroom

Kids’ bedrooms are normally not just for sleeping. They also need to have play areas with toy storage space, and they should have an area which they feel is their domain.

Try to create a balance between areas over which you have control, like wardrobes and drawers where children’s clothing is stored, and areas where your toddler governs.

Create an area where everything is their size, a desk or table and chair, a comfy chair which are just for them.

2. A bedroom they won’t outgrow

Children's needs change as they grow. When buying children's bedroom furniture decide which pieces need to be tailored to your child's size and which can be used over longer periods as they get bigger.

Articles like a chest of drawers to keep clothes in can be of a normal size and of a heavy and durable construction as this furniture item will serve you and your child over many years.

When it comes to beds, many people choose to purchase a small kids single bed for a young child and then buy a larger one later on.

This is a good idea if you are working with a limited amount of space, as are bunk beds and kids trundle beds which fit under a normal bed.

3. Let your child choose

Within reason of course, colours, artworks, bedside tables, a table and chair set, or a tiny comfy chair are all items which can be to your child's size and taste.

Browse through some interior design sites or catalogues with your child and see what kind of colours and objects catch their eye.

Obviously, these pieces of furniture will have a limited period of use so be prepared to replace them as they grow.

In view of this, you might want to look at cheaper furniture options, but remember not to compromise on a safe and sturdy construction which can stand up to a toddler!

4. Lots of storage

Proving a generous amount of storage will help keep everything in order.

Children are usually pretty unorganised, so having lots of colour-coded storage boxes will help make putting things away in the right place fun, and encourage them to develop their organisational skills.

Kids toys which have loads of little parts, like Lego and jigsaws should initially be kept out of the child's reach so only an adult can supervise the getting out and the putting away again.

5. Lots of options

There are many different children's bedroom furniture sets options, so don’t let yourself or your child get carried away by all the pretty bright colours, or by things you don't really require.

First, make a basic plan of what is needed, then set a budget and finally explore the different options.

Hopefully choosing the colours, the layout, the decorations and the furniture of your child's bedroom will be an enjoyable experience for all of you.

So, if your child's favourite colour is deep purple, you probably won't want to paint the entire room this colour, but do take into account your child's taste and include trim or one wall of his favourite colour.
