Rainbow salt tray

Have a go at making your own rainbow salt tray. Toddlers and pre-schoolers will have lots of fun watching the colours come through when they draw pictures, create patterns and write their name in the salt. It is cheap to set up, educational and you will already have the items at home.
Have a go at making your own rainbow salt tray.

Toddlers and pre-schoolers will have lots of fun watching the colours come through when they draw pictures, create patterns and write their name in the salt.

It is cheap to set up, educational and you will already have the items at home.

What you'll need:

  • A tray or large lid or a box with low slides
  • Approx 100g cooking salt
  • Cellotape
  • Coloured paper
  • A paint brush

How to make a rainbow salt tray

1. Cut the paper into strips to fit the bottom of the tray or lid width ways.

 2. Place the strips of paper in the tray, overlapping slightly, in order of the colours of a rainbow.

 3. Stick cellotape completely along the joins of the paper to avoid the salt moving underneath it.

 4. Cover the paper lightly with salt.

 5. Use a paint brush or fingers to draw, make patterns or write in the salt.

 6. When you’ve finished, shake the tray lightly and start again!

Tips

  • If you don’t have paper in the colours of a rainbow, any coloured paper will work.

  • If you don’t have a paint brush to hand, your little one’s fingers will work just as well.

  • Only a small amount of salt is required for this activity as too much can make it harder to see the drawings.
