6 Toddler party tips

1. Party Timing

  • Firstly keep the length of the party short. An hour and a half is plenty of time for 2 and 3 year olds to have fun before they crash and burn.

  • In terms of when to hold the party, try to fit it in with when your little one and their friends have their naps, perhaps late morning or first thing after lunch. The last thing you need is a room full of grumpy over-tired toddlers!

2. Party Guests

  • Try to keep your guest list manageable. Too many small guests can lead to more mayhem and meltdowns.

  • Don’t feel you have to look after and cater specifically for the adults that come along to the party. If time is short, put out some drinks and snacks and let them help themselves and mingle. Your focus should be on the younger guests.

3. Party Invites

  • When you send out the party invitations, make sure they include who the party is for, why you are having the party (ie Jacob is turning 2) and where the party will be held.

  • Let people know how long the party will run for and whether you are serving lunch or morning tea etc.

  • Also include a Party RSVP deadline and your contact details.

  • You might also want to include whether parents are invited to stay or whether they can drop and leave, depending on the age of their child/children. Most with children under 5 years old will be inclined to stay, but it’s always good to spell it out to avoid any misunderstandings.

4. Party Helpers

  • Say yes to any help you are offered! Enlist relatives and friends to help out on the day with the catering, taking party photos, helping with games etc so that you can concentrate on other things.

5. Party Activities

  • Toddlers aren’t known for their long attention spans, so keep the party activities short and simple. For instance you could play a couple of party games, make some painted biscuits or make easy crafts for them to take home.

  • Some parents opt to hire a party entertainer to keep the kids amused. Just make sure their material is age-appropriate and not likely to scare your toddler and their friends or send them off in fits of tears.

6. Party presents

  • Family and friends are bound to ask what your little one would like for their birthday. Put together a small list of birthday present ideas that you can share amongst them. That way your toddler will receive something they need or want and the person giving the gift hasn’t wasted their money on something your little one may already have or doesn't need.

  • If your toddler has way too many toys, perhaps ask relatives or close friends for money to put into a savings account for them to have when they are older.
